Cowboys-Giants Trivia: 1985

Thought this might be an interesting series of trivia questions. Or maybe not.

Jim JeffcoatDallas played the Giants in the penultimate regular season game in 1985, with the division title on the line. Many people remember Jim Jeffcoat’s 65-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter that tied the game at 14. But here’s the tougher question: with the Cowboys leading 21-14 in the fourth quarter, which quarterback led Dallas on a drive that resulted in a Timmy Newsome touchdown that eventually proved to be the winning score?

Bonus question #1: Facing 3rd-and-15 from the Dallas 48 on this fourth quarter drive, this quarterback hit a rookie receiver on an important 28-yard pass that kept the drive alive. Who was this receiver?

Bonus question #2: Name each of the Dallas quarterbacks who threw touchdown passes during that game.

Both the Giants and Cowboys made the playoffs that year, but both teams were shut out in the divisional round (Dallas lost to the Rams, 20-0, while the Giants lost to the Bears, 21-0).

What’s up, kickholder! Finally hooked up to the Internet again! Woo-hoo! I’m working on the Navajo reservation in Window Rock AZ, and what a pain to get an internet connection hooked up here. It’s like a third world country out here. At least they’re all Cowboys fans. It was funny to go back through the site and watch your journey from despair to Nirvanna. I told you to keep faith in Parcells! I was wrong about Bledsoe, though. I thought he could still get it done and lead this team to a divison crown, but obviously he played his way out of his job. After that goal line interception in the Giants game I was whole-heartedly behind the change. I thought Romo would get a shot at competing for the starting job in training camp next season, and I had a lot of hope that he would be good from the promise he showed in preseason and before, but I never dreamed or dared hope he would be this good this season! I am convinced we have found our next Dallas Cowboys Quarterback. Not just any starting QB, mind you, but a bone fide Dallas Cowboys QB! What do you think?
Anyway, I know Danny White was one of the QBs, but my memory is pretty shaky about the game. I know I watched it, that’s about it. I was a junior in high school at the time, and ‘85 and ‘86 were the two years I paid the least attention to the Cowboys because all that was pretty much on my mind at that time was girls. :) So I’m gonna guess the rookie receiver was Mike Sherrard and the other QB was Gary Hogeboom.

Good to have you back, Melonball. I readily admit that I was wrong about Bledsoe and the move to Romo. I had fears of Clint Stoerner– and would have never guessed that Romo would be in the mold of Staubach, Aikman, etc. At least so far, that is.

I was a freshman in high school in 1985, which was the first year that we had a VCR. I taped several games that year but only have a couple left (tape doesn’t work any more or I taped over the game). This was one that I had until a few years ago. Very strange game– here are the answers:

Steve Pelleur led the final drive. Danny White was knocked out in the first quarter and replaced by Gary Hogeboom. Hogeboom was injured in the second quarter and replaced by White, who threw a touchdown pass to give the Cowboys a 21-14 halftime lead. But White was injured once again and replaced by Pelleur, who had never played in a regular season game prior to that.

Bonus Question #1: Pelleur hit Karl Powe for the 28-yard gain. Powe was out of football the following season.

Bonus Question #2: White and Hogeboom threw the touchdown passes, both to Mike Renfro. Jeffcoat and Timmy Newsome scored the other two touchdowns.

Anyway, it clinched Landry’s last divisional title and secured a spot in the playoffs for the last time in Landry’s career.
