Returning to Trivia Roots

With help from my not-used-but-not-brand-spankin’-new $17.95 2006 NFL Record and Fact Book:
- With the Cowboys’ win over the New York Giants, the franchise now has 400 regular season wins. Including the loss to the Saints, the Cowboys’ overall regular season record is 400-297-6.
- Beginning this season, Drew Bledsoe needed 251 completions to become the fourth player in NFL history witih 4,000 completions. By the time he was benched vs. the Giants, he had 161.
- Bledsoe needs one more 400-yard game to tie Joe Montana and Warren Moon with the second-most 400-yard career games. He came into the season tied with Payton Manning and others with six. Bledsoe did not have a 400-yard game, of course, while Manning has had one (vs. Houston on Sept. 17).
- Bill Parcells ranks ninth all-time with 171 wins. Among the top 10 coaches of all time (Shula, Halas, Landry, Lambeau, Noll, Reeves, Knox, Schottenheimer, and Brown), Parcells ranks seventh in winning percentage at .571.
- The Saints game was Parcells’ 300th regular season game. His overall record is now 171-128-1.
- Julius Jones now has 993 yards, matching his total for all of last season. With his performance vs. New Orleans, he has improved his average-per-rush to 4.2, up from 3.9 last season.
- Mat McBriar (48 punts, 48.0 average) is still on pace to break the team record for punting average in a season (45.4), which was set by Sam Baker in 1962.
- Miles Austin (26.8) has a slightly better kickoff return average than Tyson Thompson (26.0) did prior to his injury.
- Tony Romo has now played in nine games and started seven of them. Projecting his stats for an entire season, Romo would complete 322 of 494 passes for 4324 yards and 28 TDs. The yards would be greater than Danny White’s single-season record of 3,980, set in 1983, though the TDs would fall short of White’s record of 29, also set in 1983.
- The Cowboys have improved their total net yards per game from 325.1 in 2005 to 373.4 in 2006. The Cowboys have averaged 242.5 yards passing this year, compared with 208.8 last season. Rushing has also improved, from 116.3 yards per game in 2005 to 130.8 this season.
- I bought the 2006 NFL Record and Fact Book at a book store for $17.95 and just realized that I could have acquired it from Amazon for $12.21. What gives???
