Halftime: Detroit 20, Dallas 14

It’s pretty normal for a playoff team to come out totally flat against a 2-13 team that is playing for the number one pick in the draft, right? Right?

Terence NewmanOkay, then, I applauded Terence Newman for speaking out last week. Perhaps he should just play football. His personal foul penalty for hitting a defenseless receiver negated a Roy Williams touchdown return on an interception. Detroit instead drove down and got a field goal. So there’s a 10-point turnaround. And then late in the first half, Newman– not an all-pro punt returner– muffed a catch. The Lions recovered, leading to a touchdown with two seconds remaining in the half.

DeMarcus WareDallas has shown some fight. After falling behind 13-0, the Cowboys scored twice on a run by Marion Barber and on a Tony Romo-to-Patrick Crayton pass. The Cowboys may well have extended the lead if not for the fumble by Newman. DeMarcus Ware had three sacks in the first half.

Nick Eatman made a pretty bold statement:

And in case it’s ever been a question, Detroit’s Roy Williams is much better than the Dallas version. Not only has the Texas wide receiver scored two touchdowns, but the safety struggled on defense. Other than the interception that was called back, Williams dropped one in the end zone that led to a Lions field goal. He then missed a tackle on third down that would’ve led to a Detroit field goal just before half. Instead, the Lions got a first down and scored a touchdown on the next play.

Much better? Maybe today, but that’s stretching it more than a little bit.
