These questions should be a little bit more difficult than those that I posted on Wednesday. These focus on the very early years of the Cowboys, mostly before the team had been formed.

Dallas Texans1. In 1952, Texas textile mogul Giles Miller moved which NFL team to Dallas to become the original Dallas Texans?

2. Original Cowboys owner Clint Murchison nearly purchased which NFL team in 1958?

3. Where was Tex Schramm working when Murchison hired him to become the first general manager in the history of the Dallas Cowboys?

4. Tom Landry began his professional playing career with which team?

5. Name the positions that Landry played as a member of the New York Giants during the 1950s.

6. Prior to being formed, the Dallas franchise had begun as the Dallas Steers. What name was chosen before the team finally settled on the Cowboys?

7. Why were the Cowboys not allowed to participate in the NFL’s 1960 college draft?

8. [Edited] What player taken by the Cowboys in the 1960s expansion draft had been drafted number 10 by the Chicago Cardinals in 1957, in the same draft that featured the likes of Paul Horning, John Brodie, Len Dawson, Jim Brown, and Jim Parker?

Frank Clarke9. Where had receiver Frank Clarke played prior to joining the Cowboys after being selected in the 1960 expansion draft?

10. In addition to drafting quarterback Don Meredith, the Cowboys brought in which quarterback from the Giants, expecting the latter to lead the team until Meredith was ready?

  1. Comment by Marty Ogelvie:

Love these questions, not sure about a few:
    1: no clue
    2: again, no clue
3: Schramm was working with the LA Rams.
4: Landry started with the NY Yankees.
5: Landy was a pro bowl type CB with the Giants.
    6: Rangers
7: The Cowboys didn’t participate in the 1960 NFL draft because they were awarded a franchise after the draft or too late for the draft.
    8: good question, no clue.
    9: guessing Cleveland..
10: That would have to be Don Heinrich.

  2. Comment by kickholder:

Good job, Marty. You are completely correct on questions 4, 6, 7, 9, and 10.

Here are a couple of hints:

Question 3: Schramm worked for the Rams until 1957 but was working somewhere else before joining the Dallas organization.

Question 5: Landry was indeed a great defensive back, but he also played two other positions.

  3. Comment by melonball:

    1. New York Yanks
    2. stumped on that one
3.don’t know, but I think it was in the media and not with the NFL?
    5. halfback and quarterback
    8. I think you’re referring to Jerry Tubbs, but he was drafted after Jim Brown, #10 overall. Paul Hournung was the #1 overall pick.

  4. Comment by kickholder:

I corrected question #8, Melonball. Thanks for pointing that out. Jerry Tubbs is correct.

    Question #1: Correct.

Question #2: I found references to this in Peter Golenbock’s book as well as ESPN. Here is the ESPN blurb:

“As the story goes, in 1958 Texas oilman Clint Murchison thought he was finally closing in on his dream of bringing pro football to Dallas. Two previous attempts to purchase teams had failed, but now word reached Murchison that Redskins owner George Preston Marshall was eager to sell his club because the team was doing poorly and Marshall needed money. Imagine! The ‘Skins in Dallas! But that blasphemy was not to be. For just as the sale was about to be announced, Marshall demanded a change in terms. Murchison told him to go to hell and canceled the deal.”

Question #3: Schramm worked for the Rams until 1957 and then worked for CBS before joining the Cowboys.

Question #5: Landry was also a punter and a kick returner.
