Way Too Much Information Wednesday: Week 3
By Matt Cordon (kh). Filed in Trivia and Stats |With the Cowboys scoring 45 and 37 points in consecutive weeks to open the season, it seemed a good idea to focus on where the 2007 team stands in history as far as points scored after two games.
Team Record: Points Scored After the First Two Games
Only two other times in team history have the Cowboys scored more than a total of 82 points after the first two games of the season. In fact, the team had not previously scored more than a total of 50 points after two games this entire decade and had not scored more than 70 since 1978. Here is a list of the highest number of points scored after two games:
1971- 91
1968- 87
2007- 82
1966- 80
1978- 72
1995- 66
1999- 65
1983- 65
1985- 65
1986- 62
1998- 61
The fewest number of points after two games, incidentally, was 21, set in 1989.
Team Record: Points Scored After the First Three Games
Sticking with this obscure subject, if the Cowboys can score at least 18 points against the Bears, it will mark the sixth time in team history that Dallas has scored more than 100 combined points in the first three games. Here are the others:
1968- 133
1966- 127
1971- 107
1973- 105
1999- 100
The fewest was also set in 1989, when the team scored only 28 points in the first three games.
Pigskin Pick’em: 6/16
I took a step backward in Pigskin Pick’em this week, thanks largely to the early games on Sunday. Of the ten early games, I only managed to get two correct, thanks to Detroit failing to cover at 3 1/2 and thanks to San Francisco’s win over St. Louis.
The final damage:
Fantasy Football: Thurman’s Thieves (1-1)
If Thurman’s Thieves actually played defense, I would say we looked a bit like the Cowboys, only without the turnovers. To give you an idea of how bad my week went, consider this:
Drew Brees (starter): 13 points
Matt Leinart (backup): 12.6 points
Drew Brees and Matt Leinart combined: 25.6 points
Derek Anderson (third string): 33.9 points.
Anderson alone wouldn’t have saved me, but he could have put me in much better position. I also sat LB Derrick Johnson (K.C.) and WR Marty Booker (Mia.). Those three would have made a big difference. In the end, though, the Thieves fell 153 to 105.8.
