Live Draft Commentary: First Round
The draft begins at 2 p.m., and teams have only 10 minutes between selections as opposed to 15 minutes. With the 22nd pick, Dallas will probably make its selection somewhere around 5 p.m.
Here is the draft order of the first round, which I will update as teams make their picks.
1. Miami Dolphins: Jake Long, T, Michigan.
Note: The Dolphins already signed Long, so we’ve known about this pick for a few days now.
2. St. Louis Rams: Chris Long, DE, Virginia
Note: Again, no surprise. There were reports this morning that the Rams would take Long, son of former Raider Howie Long.
3. Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
Note: Atlanta found its replacement for Michael Vick.
4. Oakland Raiders: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
Note: So much for trade rumors involving the Cowboys.
5. Kansas City Chiefs: Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
6. New York Jets: Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State
7. New Orleans Saints (from Patriots via 49ers): Sedric Ellis, DT, USC
Note: The Patriots traded the #7 pick to the Saints, allowing New Orleans to take Ellis.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Baltimore Ravens): Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida
Note: Jacksonville moved up from 26th to 8th by trading with Baltimore.
9. Cincinnati Bengals: Keith Rivers, LB, USC
10. New England Patriots (from New Orleans Saints): Jerod Mayo, LB, Tennessee
Note: The Patriots traded the 7th pick and a 5th round pick to New Orleans for the 10th pick and a 3rd rounder.
11. Buffalo Bills: Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
Note: So much for McKelvin joining DeMarcus Ware in Dallas. McKelvin was an early candidate for the Cowboys’ 22nd pick, but his stock obviously rose.
12. Denver Broncos: Ryan Clady, T, Boise State
13. Carolina Panthers: Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon
14. Chicago Bears: Chris Williams, T, Vanderbilt
15. Kansas City Chiefs (from Detroit Lions): Branden Albert, G, Virginia
16. Arizona Cardinals: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tennessee State.
17. Detroit Lions (from Kansas City Chiefs via Minnesota Vikings): Gosder Cherilus, T, Boston College
18. Baltimore Ravens (from Houston Texans): Joe Flacco, QB, Delaware
19. Carolina Panthers (from Philadelphia Eagles): Jeff Otah, T, Pitt
Note: The Eagles received the Panthers’ first round pick in 2009 so that Carolina could move up to take Otah.
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas
Note: Talib was one of the players who many thought would go to Dallas.
21. Atlanta Falcons (from Washington Redskins): Sam Baker, T, USC
22. Dallas Cowboys (from Cleveland Browns): Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas
Here is my post about Jones.
23. Pittsburgh Steelers: Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois
Note: Let the debates begin. Quite a few Cowboys fans are going to argue that the Cowboys should have taken Mendenhall here. This may look like 2004 all over again if Felix doesn’t work out.
24. Tennessee Titans: Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina
Note: Johnson was the fastest back in the draft.
25. Dallas Cowboys (from Seattle Seahawks): Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida
Here is my post on Jenkins.
26. Houston Texans (from Baltimore Ravens via Jacksonville Jaguars): Duane Brown, T, Virginia Tech
27. San Diego Chargers: Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona
28. Seattle Seahawks (from Dallas Cowboys): Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC
29. San Francisco 49ers (from Indianapolis Colts): Kentwan Balmer, DE, North Carolina
30. N.Y. Jets (from Green Bay Packers): Dustin Keller, TE, Purdue
31. New York Giants: Kenny Phillips, S, Miami
