Suggested Jersey Numbers for the New Dallas Cowboys
I don’t know that anyone is waiting anxiously for me to resume the Greatest Players by Number Series, but before I continue with that, here’s a look at some possible numbers for these new players.
[I assume that these players have not been assigned a number; if they have, just play along with me that they haven’t…]
Felix Jones, RB: #25
Pat Watkins currently has number 25, but since Watkins wore #22 at Florida State, he ought to consider what he could get from Jones for the number. Jones has a better chance of being a great #25– perhaps the best ever (even if Watkins is leading our poll right now)– so this deal should go through. Watkins could pick up #31 now that Roy Williams is changing to #38.
Mike Jenkins, CB: #44
Jenkins wore #4 in college at Oregon, so he’ll need a new number. I’d suggest #44, which was worn by backup TE Rodney Hannah. With all of the tight end movement lately, I doubt Hannah will be around long to use it.
Martellus Bennett, TE: #87
Bennett wore #13 at Texas A&M, so he’ll also need a new number. Dallas has not had a great #87 in its history, and nobody has worn it since Dedric Ward in 2004.
Tashard Choice, RB: #32
Choice was #22 in college, so that number is out. He is most likely a better prospect than Anthony Thomas, the last player to wear #32.
Orlando Scandrick, CB: #28
Scandrick can’t wear #8, which we wore at Boise State. #38 is out because of Roy Williams, but #28 is available thanks to the departure of Tyson Thompson. Scandrick won’t remind anyone of Darren Woodson, but he offers more at this point than Thompson did last year.
Erik Walden, DE/LB: #95
Walden wore #58 at Middle Tennessee State. Assuming that he plays defensive end in the NFL and not OLB, he’ll need a number in the 70s or 90s. The 90s are pretty full, but he could take #95 now that Jason Ferguson is gone.

Felix Jones #25,
Like you said, he pays Watkins for that number and Watkins takes #31 just like his buddy Antonio Cromartie. Antonio was #25 his rookie year and then switched.
Mike Jenkins #24,
This is a bit of a reach but I think MBIII goes to his college #21 now that Julius Jones is gone and Jenkins takes #24. If that doesn’t happen, which it probably won’t… then Jenkins takes #21 or #23.
Martellus Bennett #85,
Some of his pictures have him wearing #85, maybe there was another Bennett that wore #85 at Texas A&M or he wore it his freshman year and then swtiched to #13, but I think he wears #85… last worn by Jeff Robinson and Jamaica Rector. The DC.com website says Mike Jefferson is #85 right now, but I don’t think he’ll be wearing it for too long even tho Sam Hurd says he’s the best WR on the team (after T.O. of course).
Tashard Choice #23,
He can’t have #22… so lets give him #23 that is if Jenkins doesn’t take it. He will have to pay Oglesby some $ to get that #.
Orlando Scandrick #32,
Can’t give him #28… that’s Woodsons #, if you can’t wear #8, #12, #22, #48, #88 then #28 shouldn’t we worn either. Add #33 to that list too. He can have #32 or #35.
Erik Walden #58,
He’ll play LB… if he doesn’t take #58 then #53 or if he takes a # in the 90’s then he can have his college #95.
And speaking of #87… didn’t Zuriel Smith wear that # too? or was it after him that Ward wore it? I can’t remember.

Rookie Felix Jones inherits a jersey number that has been involved in 1,350 tackles for the Dallas Cowboys.
Is that really a good thing for a running back?
Take it from the man who wore No. 28 and made it famous for the Cowboys (1992-2004): It’s not the right thing.
Former Cowboys safety Darren Woodson saw his old jersey number scoffed up by free-agent running back Tyson Thompson in 2005. Now Felix Jones has it.
“Are you serious? Already? Again?” Woodson said when informed that the Cowboys’ top draft pick now has No. 28, which hasn’t been out of circulation since Woody retired.
“That’s my number, that’s just how I feel.” Woodson explained. “It’s hard to swallow.”
