The Packers and Steelers Both Had Long Post-Dynasty Blues

There is hope that the Cowboys will not remain in their current funk forever. It might take another decade or so to snap out of it, but there is hope that it will end someday.

It has only been 15 years since the Cowboys won Super Bowl XXX in Tempe, Arizona. It is certainly not unusual for a team to suffer through years of mediocrity after sitting atop the football world for a few years. This year’s Super Bowl participants are good examples.

Green Bay Packers, 1968-1996

The Packers won five NFL Championships between 1961 and 1967, including three in a row. The last win for this dynasty was a 33-14 victory over Oakland in Super Bowl II. The years after that were not kind, though. Green Bay only managed to win one playoff game between Super Bowl II and the playoffs in 1993, when Brett Favre led the Packers to last-second win at Detroit. Three years later, the title returned to Green Bay.

Pittsburgh Steelers, 1979-1995

The Steelers were rarely a bad team after their dynasty of the 1970s, which ended after their win over Los Angeles in Super Bowl XIV. But Pittsburgh had trouble getting past the 9-7 mark, a record they had five times in less than 15 years after Super Bowl XIV win. The Steelers made one AFC Championship Game appearance during the 1980s (1984), but otherwise only managed two playoff wins during the 14 years following the 1979 season.
