Tuesday Trivia: 1985 Cowboys Beat the Chargers in Overtime

Watch the clip below for tonight’s trivia question. If you can’t see the video, the question appears below as well.

In 1985, the Cowboys traveled to San Diego to face the Chargers in a preseason game. Trailing 24-17 late in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys moved the ball to the San Diego 14. Gary Hogeboom threw a pass that bounced off safety Gill Bird’s hands and ended up in the hands of a Dallas receiver. Which former Dolphin helped the Cowboys force overtime by catching that pass?

Dallas won the game in overtime on a Rafael Septien field goal. Strangely, starter Danny White returned to the game in overtime only to injure his ribs on a bootleg run.

The Cowboys finished the 1985 preseason with a 4-0 record. Dallas finished three seasons unbeaten and untied, including 1966, 1971, and 1985. The other undefeated preseason came in 2006, when Dallas went 3-0-1.

Without taking a peak I think the former Dolphin receiver must have been Duriel Harris.

It was indeed Harris. Incidentally, I learned that it is not easy to get text-to-speech characters to say Hogeboom and Duriel Harris correctly. I had to spell them “Hoge a boom” and “Dureal Hare iss” for the names to come out somewhat correctly.
