The Only Other Time the Cowboys Blew a 17-Point Halftime Lead

Back to Tuesday’s trivia question:

The Cowboys led the Lions 20-3 at the half. This marked the 63rd time in franchise history that Dallas has led a game by at least 17 at the half. Dallas has won 61 of those games.

One loss was to the Lions last Sunday. Against which team and in which year did the Cowboys suffer the other loss?

The answer requires you to remember another free-agent QB who showed some spark in the preseason and earned a couple of NFL starts.

The other Dallas QB to help blow a 17-point halftime lead was Clint Stoerner.

That would be Clint Stoerner, the Arkansas product.

He started against the Arizona Cardinals on October 28, 2001 and led Dallas to a 17-3 win. One week later, he started against the New York Giants and led the team to a 24-7 halftime advantage.

The wheels then came off. Stoerner threw three interceptions while Dallas led by at least 10 points. He threw four interceptions, and the Giants came all the way back to send the game into overtime. It was so bad that Dave Campo replaced Stoerner with Ryan Leaf.

Morton Anderson kicked the game winner in overtime to drop the Cowboys to 2-5. That record fell all the way to 2-8 before the team won three of its last six.

Stoerner never played another down of football in the NFL.

Anyway, below is the complete list of games where the Cowboys have led by at least 17 at the half.
